In March, the Lord-Lieutenant had the pleasure of presenting Robin Shackell with his British Empire Medal at an Investiture held at the Turner Contemporary in Margate. Robin Shackell receives the British Empire Medal for his work as Deputy Governor of the Pitcairn Islands during his time serving as Consul General Auckland, New Zealand and is honoured for his leadership during the Henderson Island expedition. The expedition exceeded all objectives, clearing over 6000kg of plastic waste and conducting vital scientific research. Robin was instrumental in ensuring that this important expedition generated worldwide media coverage to highlight the damage being caused by plastic pollution. Robin demonstrated the highest level of leadership and diplomacy and his commitment to his team saw the successful and safe completion of an expedition that will play a major role in addressing the global issue of plastic pollution. Members of the Expedition Team as well as Robin’s family joined Robin on this very special day.
